10 Star Rating System for Book Reviews
Why The Reviewers use a 10 star rating system for our book reviews
A lot of review sites appear to use a 5 star rating system but in our opinion this isn’t really good enough for book reviews and is why we use a 10 star system.
Let’s 1st look at a 5 star system and base it on;
- – Poor
- – OK
- – Good
- – Very Good
- – Excellent
From what I have seen of book reviews an awful lot of people give 5 star ratings of books they have read so assume they think they are excellent.
The problem is, if I was to ask a number people who had given 10 plus 5 star ratings what their favourite book is they would probably name 1 or 2 out of that 10, so how do they distinguish the truly excellent book from the other excellent books?
With the 10 star rating system 9 stars is Excellent, which still allows 9.5 stars for the truly Excellent and 10 reserved for that really rare book you come across that you would consider in the top 2 or 3 of books you have ever read.
Let’s now look at a 10 star system and base it on;
- – Very Poor
- – Poor
- – Mediocre
- – OK
- – Good
- – Better thanGood
- – Very Good
- – Extremely Good
- – Excellent
- – Within the top 2 or 3 books you have ever read
Basically if you are used to a 5 star rating compare the below
5 Star System | 10 Star System |
---|---|
Would have scored 1: Poor | Score 1 or 2: Very poor or poor |
Would have scored 2: OK | Score 3 or 4: Mediocre or OK |
Would have scored 3: Good | Score 5 or 6: Good or better than good |
Would have scored 4: Very Good | Score 7 or 8: Very or Extremely Good |
Would have scored 5: Excellent | Score 9: Excellent (Saving 10 for THE book) |
The main reason for using a 10 star system is we feel that far too many 5 star ratings are given in book reviews and once people have given a 5 star rating where do they go from there when they read what they consider to be the greatest book they have ever read?
Note: we also allow half star ratings so if you read that truly excellent book but it’s not the greatest book you have ever read you can always give it a 9.5 rating.
